Thank you for a memorable and extremely successful 2014 Inaugural Season EVJ Beach. We can't wait for next year!

***CONGRATULATIONS*** EVJ Beach Travel Team member Darian C (below picture, left) was selected for the third year in a row to participate in the U15 USAV A2 Beach HP Team Camp and Championship Tournament. She was partnered with a player from New Orleans (below picture, right) and after losing only one match to the #1 seed, went on to win the 2014 Silver Division with an overall match record of 5-1. The points she earned from the HP tournament finish have placed her currently as the #3 14U junior beach player in the USAV ranking system with 1400 overall points.

About the EVJ Beach Program

In the spring of 2014 we launched our inaugural "Beach Program", EVJ Beach Volleyball Club, or EVJ Beach for short. EVJ Beach follows the same mission and abides by the same philosophies that have endured for 25 years in our indoor program. With the NCAA approving sand volleyball at Division I & II schools and local high schools offering sand volleyball, the future of beach volleyball is brighter than ever. After a successful pilot year of partnering with Juniors in the Sand, a community based beach/sand volleyball league, EVJ was ready to expand its girls and boys indoor operations to the outdoors due to the overwhelming interest. We had an amazing inaugural season with an amazing group of kids and families! We look forward to strengthening our program going forward and continuing to help many young players discover the sport of beach volleyball in an organized, competitive, fun and healthy environment!

In our inaugural season the club offered opportunities to players in the 12U/14U/16U age groups. We had a Training Program for 12U as well as Travel & Training Programs for 14U/16U. We were fortunate to have Coach Travis McKinney and Coach Kristal Harris as EVJ Beach Head Coaches. Both have extensive beach volleyball experience and love working in the sand with the kids. Having coached indoor at EVJ for several years they will easily transition the indoor philosophy to the outdoor. Due to the high enrollment numbers we added two Assistant Coaches to the program. In 2015 we are exploring the option of adding 18U girls and a boys program as well.

Whatever your goal may be…our programs will provide an opportunity for both the serious player looking to take their skills to their high school team or pursue a college scholarship or the casual player looking to improve their all-around game indoor and outdoor. Beach volleyball is separate from indoor. All players regardless of indoor club affiliation are eligible and welcome to play EVJ Beach.

EVJ Beach 2014 Program Summary

  • Tryout required. 48 player cap.
  • The 2014 season ran for 10 weeks, which included twice per week practices of 1.5 hours each or 25.5 hours of total training.
  • The Club utilized Court One Sand Courts. Practice groups assigned based on age and skill level, with more weight on skill level than age.
  • In addition to practices, Travel Teams received valuable coaching at club selected local and out-of-state tournaments.
  • All EVJ Beach players received varying practice and tournament gear.
  • The Club participated in three AZ Region Junior Beach local tournaments, three travel/qualifying tournaments through USAV and one non-qualifying event through the CBVA.
  • Travel teams are expected to attend each local and out-of-state tournament on the club schedule. Training teams are encouraged to attend any local or out of state tournament on the club schedule.
  • Fees DO NOT include tournament entry fees, tournament registration fees, travel costs such as lodging, transportation and meals.

EVJ Beach – Training Program

This program is designed for players who want to learn the beach game or improve on their overall game. Beach volleyball is a great way to improve on your ball control and mobility. Training teams practice with similar drills and repetition as the Travel Program according to their skill level. These teams will compete locally at their discretion. The coaches are committed to the travel teams at tournaments. All skill levels are welcome in our Training Program. We will place the players in a group with those of similar skill level during practices to ensure quality training for all.

EVJ Beach – Travel Program

This program is designed for players who want to play collegiately and for players who are looking to cross-train and compete at the highest level. Regardless of whether you want to play indoor, outdoor or both, this program will improve your game with countless touches on the ball and the ultimate conditioning. Players will be prepared to play at USAV/CBVA junior tournaments, USAV High Performance and college camps. The program is designed to operate around EVJ's indoor schedule; however, if EVJ indoor players encounter indoor conflicts we will attempt to make up those missed practices. Coaches will accompany travel team players to all tournaments.

Benefits of Playing Beach Volleyball

  • The sand game is GREAT for improving a player's all-around volleyball skills. Whatever the player's weaknesses, the sand game allows the player to work on those in a more demanding physical environment.
  • Unlike the 6 person indoor game, players touch the ball in every rally. With just two players to cover the court, they learn to read the opposing offense and anticipate the attack much better.
  • Dealing with the elements, sun and wind for example, helps the players become more focused and they adapt better to the game.
  • Player height is less important outdoors. Ball control and skill are most important.
  • Playing in the sand is a great way to improve a player's jump, mobility and ball control.
  • Communicating effectively is essential in volleyball and even more so in the two-player sand game. Playing sand teaches (forces) the players to learn how to communicate with each other and as a result they grow stronger together as teammates.
  • Everything noted above translates to the indoor game and as a result they are improving their all-around game and conditioning.
